Tartans Close Season with 5-1 Win Against #10 Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team closed the season with a 5-1 victory against 10th-ranked Case Western Reserve University on Sunday, April 28 to finish the year with a 16-18 record and 9-11 University Athletic Association (UAA) mark. The Spartans are now 31-6 and 16-4 in the UAA.

  • Senior Amanda Smith pitched the complete game, striking out two batters while giving up three hits.
  • The Tartans collected five hits by five different batters while five different players had an RBI.
  • The Tartans opened the scoring in the first inning when sophomore Maya Goodwin singled to score sophomore Kira Monji.
  • The second inning saw the Tartans score two more runs with freshman Maddy Beall singling to score freshman Allison Li and senior Kiera Boucher reached on a fielder's choice to score junior Allie Rome.
  • After Case Western Reserve scored in the fifth inning, the Tartans added two runs in the sixth with RBIs from Rome on a sacrifice fly and freshman Jasmine Chao on a single.
  • Smith then retired six of the next eight batters to close the game for the win.

Notes

  • Smith ends the season with 11 wins, a school season record, and a career win total of 31 which is also a school record.
  • Boucher closed her year with 41 hits and 19 stolen bases to lead the Tartans. She now has 123 career hits and 55 stolen bases which are school records.
  • Boucher also holds the career record for runs scored with 91.
  • Goodwin set a new single-season record for runs scored with 33 while Boucher hit six home runs to set a single-season record.
