Tartans Lose Lead in Fourth Quarter, Fall at #22 WashU

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team lost a fourth-quarter lead midway through the period and fell to the 22nd-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Bears on Sunday, February 19. The Tartans are now 11-13 overall and 2-11 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Bears are 17-7 and 10-3.

How it Happened

  • After eight ties and six lead changes, the Tartans held a two-point halftime advantage and led by as many as seven, 29-22, early in the second period.
  • Sophomore Catherine Or had 15 first-half points with eight rebounds while sophomore Anisha Chintala scored 13 points in the first half.
  • Or drained a three-pointer on the opening possession of the third quarter which started an 11-5 run for the Tartans who led 51-43 two minutes and 17 seconds into the quarter.
  • The Bears cut the deficit to four on a driving layup by Maya Arnott which made the score 58-54.
  • The Tartans answered with an 11-6 run to take their largest lead at 69-60 with 1:38 to go in the frame.
  • The Bears later cut it to two points but Chintala made a layup with four seconds to go to make it a four-point game heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Or scored 11 of the Tartans' 31 third-quarter points and assisted on seven other points scored.
  • The Tartans led 77-74 following two free throws by Or that gave her 30 points for the game, matching a career-high, with 7:12 to play.
  • The Bears scored the next eight points to lead 82-77 with 5:12 to go.
  • The Tartans pulled back to within two points on a layup by freshman Ellen Angwin with 2:23 to go but the Bears would hold on to the lead and score 13 of the final 23 points to complete the come-from-behind win.

For the Tartans

  • Or finished with 30 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
  • Chintala tallied 19 points while Angwin finished with 12 points.
  • Matsko recorded 11 points as sophomore Isha Nambisan closed the game with 10 points.

For the Bears

  • Arnott scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the post.
  • Jessica Brooks recorded a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds
