Tartans Break for Holiday After 70-42 Home Win vs. Pitt-Greensburg

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team improved to 4-1 on Tuesday, November 21 with a 70-42 victory against the University of Pitt-Greensburg at home. Sophomore Savannah Gibbs led the Tartans with her third double-double of the season.

How It Happened

  • The Tartans spread out the scoring in the first quarter with Gibbs tallying seven points and sophomore Ava Arias scoring six points to lead the squad to a 27-6 quarter advantage.
  • Four different Tartans hit three-pointers in the first frame, as the team shot 66.7% from long range and 52.4% from the floor to jump out to the 21-point lead.
  • A 16-2 run by the Tartans over the first six minutes of the second quarter extended their lead to 43-8 before the home team led 45-14 at the break.
  • Gibbs dropped in 11 points in the second quarter, as the team shot 50.0%.
  • The iron wasn't as kind in the third quarter for the Tartans who shot 18.8% and didn't score for the first 5:20 of the half.
  • Pitt-Greensburg had a spurt but could only chip away at the deficit and trailed by 22 going into the final quarter.
  • Junior Isha Nambisan led the Tartans off the bench in the fourth period scoring nine points while picking up four steals.
  • The Tartans finished the game with 40 points in the paint and 22 points off turnovers while shooting 41.2%.

For the Tartans

  • Gibbs finished with a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Junior Anisha Chintala scored in double figures for the second time this season with 10 points.
  • Nambisan and freshman Allie Heyer closed the game with nine points apiece, all of Heyer's coming from behind the arc.
  • Freshman Kayla Delmore led with four assists while sophomore Bethany Carlin led with two blocks.

For the Bobcats

  • Anna Durbin led with nine points.
  • Durbin and Malina Boord each pulled down eight rebounds.
  • Melina Maietta led with four assists and three steals.

Notes

  • The 27 first-quarter points were the most in the first frame of a game this season.
