Team Defense Leads Tartans to 50-Point Win

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team collected a season-best 14 steals on its way to an 81-31 victory at home against the College of Wooster on Saturday, December 9. The Tartans are now 7-2 for the season while the Fighting Scots drop to 2-5.

How It Happened

  • The Tartans led 12-4 following a fast break layup by junior Anisha Chintala with 3:25 to play before Wooster finished the quarter with an 8-2 run to trail 14-12 at the first break.
  • Wooster's Tatiyana Sturdivant accounted for all 12 of the team's points as the Fighting Scots shot 26.3% in the frame with the Tartans shooting 35.7%.
  •  Freshman Allie Heyer led the Tartans in the second quarter with eight points and sophomore Piper Ligotti hit the home team's first three-pointer of the game which sparked a 20-2 run over the final seven minutes of the period.
  • Wooster entered the game shooting the nation's second-best percentage from long range at 40.0% but were just 1-of-15 through the first 20 minutes.
  • The Tartans extended the 21-point halftime lead to 38 points by the end of the third quarter by picking up six steals and scoring nine points off eight Wooster turnovers.
  • Freshman Kayla Delmore was 3-for-3 from long range in the third frame to lead the team with 11 points while Chintala had five of the team's six steals.
  • Anna Prouty scored five points in the final period for the Tartans while senior Sam Glowasky hit her first three-pointer of the season to give the Tartans an 81-30 lead with 1:45 to go.
  • Wooster's shooting woes continued in the second half as they were 5-of-29 (17.2%) from the floor and finished the game 2-of-26 from the three-point arc.

For the Tartans

  • Chintala led the team with 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and nine steals, just one steal shy of tying the school record.
  • Sophomore Savannah Gibbs tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and had four assists.
  • Delmore and Heyer each reached double figures in points with 11 and 10, respectively.
  • Sophomore Liv LaFond and Prouty each pulled down seven rebounds.

For the Fighting Scots

  • Sturdivant finished with 18 points, making the team's only two three-pointers of the game.
  • Alyssa Chritz scored eight points and Erica Beaty led the team with seven rebounds.
  • San Nicolas finished with a double-double after grabbing 10 rebounds.
  • Taylor Milroy and Aizlyn Thompson both finished with 14 points.

Notes

  • The Tartans shot 44.4% from long range, their best effort for the season.
  • The Tartans outrebounded the Fighting Scots by 20, their third-highest margin this season.
