Fourth Quarter Fuels Tartans 15-Point Victory Against Mount Aloysius

(MARIETTA, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team rebounded from a three-point loss to 17th-ranked Trine University on Friday with a 69-54 win against Mount Aloysius College on Saturday, December 30 in its final game of the Jim Meagle Holiday Classic hosted by Marietta College. The Tartans are now 8-3 while the Mounties drop to 4-7.

How It Happened

  • The Tartans struggled from the field in the first quarter, shooting just 23.5%, but were able to knock down 3-of-7 three-point attempts and trailed the Mounties, 16-14, at the end of the first 10 minutes of action.
  • Freshman Allie Heyer hit two of those three-pointers, including the last shot of the quarter with 1:19 to go.
  • After the Mounties scored the first two points of the second quarter, the Tartans went on a 13-0 run including a fast break layup and a three-pointer on back-to-back positions by junior Isha Nambisan to build a nine-point lead with more than half the quarter left to play.
  • The Tartans capitalized on seven Mountie turnovers in the frame to score nine points and last held the nine-point lead with 53 seconds to go following a driving layup by junior Anisha Chintala.
  • The Mounties slowly chipped away at the Tartans' lead in the third quarter and used a six-point run that covered two minutes of action to take back the lead at 44-42.
  • A pair of Chintala free throws tied the score for the second time in the quarter with 56 seconds to go before a layup by Molly Kosmack gave Mount Aloysius a two-point advantage heading into the final quarter.
  • Junior Catherine Or and sophomore Savannah Gibbs, the leading scorers for the Tartans, took over in the fourth quarter by scoring eight points apiece as the team had its best shooting performance of the game in the frame hitting 11-of-18 from the field for 24 total points.
  • The Tartans scored 20 points in the paint in the final quarter and eight second-chance points while building a 15-point lead with a 12-point scoring run that ended the game.

For the Tartans

  • Or finished the game with her third double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Gibbs tallied 13 points for the second straight game and grabbed eight rebounds, including five offensive boards.
  • Sophomore Ava Arias scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench.
  • Chintala led the team with five assists and five steals while freshman Kayla Delmore collected a season-best three blocks.

For the Mounties

  • Kosmack finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Angelina Kohlwaies scored in double-digits with 12 points.
