Three Score in Double Figures vs. #1 NYU

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team hosted the top-ranked New York University Violets on Sunday, January 14 for its third University Athletic Association (UAA) game of the season. The Violets stood up to their number-one ranking and topped the Tartans, 90-61. The Tartans are now 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the UAA while the Violets move to 14-0 and 3-0.

How It Happened

• The Violets jumped out to a 13-0 lead, making 5-of-7 from the field including three from behind the arc in the first four minutes of the game.
• A three-pointer by junior Anisha Chintala made the score 22-15 with 39 seconds to go in the first quarter before Belle Pellecchia answered with a three-pointer after an offensive rebound to give the Violets a double-digit lead to end the quarter.
• Five minutes into the second period, the Violets led by 19 points, as they made three more long-range shots.
• The Tartans made just four shots from the floor in the second quarter while the Violets continued to love their time in Wiegand Gymnasium by ending the frame with another pair of triples and two layups to lead 47-27 at the break.
• Sophomore Ava Arias and junior Catherine Or each scored seven points in the third quarter for the Tartans who trailed by 24 points heading into the final frame.
• Five different substitutes scored 19 points for the Violets in the fourth quarter while the Tartans got points from four different players and made three shots of their own from behind the arc.

For the Tartans

• Arias led the team with 13 points after connecting on a career-best three three-pointers.
• Freshman Allie Heyer finished with 11 points while Or scored in double-digits with 10 points.
• Chintala led all players with seven assists and five steals.

For the Violets

• Reigning UAA Rookie of the Year, Caroline Pepper, led the team with 22 points in 19 minutes off the bench by hitting 6-of-7 from the three-point arc.
• Pellecchia recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while Natalie Bruns scored 15 points and had three blocks.

Notes

• The Tartans scored the second most points against the Violets this season as two teams reached 63 points against NYU this year.
• The Violets hit a season-best 14 three-pointers for the game.
• Chintala continues to lead the UAA in steals with 41 for the season and 2.9 a game.
