#15 Tartans Win Road Match 6-1 Against Franciscan

(STEUBENVILLE, Ohio) – The 15th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team scored six goals on Wednesday, September 7 in a non-conference game at Franciscan University to move their record to 1-1 with a 6-1 victory. Franciscan is now 1-2 for the season.

The game-winning goal was scored by senior Alex Adams in the ninth minute off a penalty kick.

  • Freshman Ashley Tirrill started the scoring less than four minutes into the game with a shot to the low corner off a feed from Adams.
  • Franciscan cut the Tartan lead in half with a goal in the 31st minute by Tania Davidson that was over the hands of Olivia Brand.
  • Freshman Jenna Hallbeck entered the game in the 31st minute and scored her first career goal in the 39th minute to give the Tartans a 3-1 halftime advantage.
  • Junior Breana Valentovish added to the Tartans' lead with a goal in the 68th minute.
  • Two minutes after Valentovish scored, sophomore Gemma Jefferson recorded a goal to make it 5-1.

Player Thoughts

"The win at Franciscan was a great start to a big week of games for us," said Valentovish. "We are starting to look more cohesive as a team, but we also identified a few places of improvement we will sort out in practice. A lot of new players scored and everyone contributed to the win. We are very excited for our first two home games this weekend and hope to build off the momentum we got today."

  • Adams now has 11 game-winning goals for her career and is two shy of being tied for second all-time in program history.
  • Jefferson led the team with five shots on goal for the game, she recorded eight total shots in 13 games played in 2021-22.
  • Brand recorded her first career win in her 11th game played and second start.
