Tartans Earn NCAA Championship Bid, to Open Play in Michigan
(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – For the second straight season, the Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team will compete for a national championship after receiving an at-large bid to the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship. The Tartans are making their third appearance in the national tournament under the direction of five-year head coach Anne Bock, and the ninth overall appearance in program history.
The Tartans, who finished the regular season with an overall record of 23-8, placed fifth at the recently concluded University Athletic Association (UAA) Volleyball Championship after soundly defeating ninth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis by a 3-1 score on Saturday in the fifth-place match. The Cardinal and Gray played eight nationally ranked teams this year, topping 10th-ranked Berry University in September.
Carnegie Mellon will travel to Hope College in Holland, Michigan, for an eight-team regional that includes UAA counterpart, Case Western Reserve University. The Tartans will open the tournament against Pacific Lutheran (19-7), winners of the inaugural Northwest Conference, on Thursday, November 16 at a time to be announced.
Should the Tartans advance, they'll face the winner of Transylvania University (25-6) and the University of Mount Union (20-8) on Friday, November 17. Third-ranked Hope (27-2) will play Bethany (W.Va.) College in the opening round with the winner facing the winner of Case Western Reserve (22-8) and 23rd-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point (22-9). The second-round winners will play on Saturday, November 18.
The championship's final weekend will be November 29 through December 2 in Claremont, California, at Roberts Pavilion, home to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Claremont McKenna College.
