(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The 2016 fall semester proved to be yet another successful chapter for Carnegie Mellon University athletics teams in competition and in the classroom, as a total of 77 student-athletes recorded a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) for the semester. This is a continuation of last year’s academic success, when 74 student-athletes posted 4.0s in the fall semester while 80 were perfect last spring.

All 18 varsity athletic programs achieved a 3.10 or better while football led the way with 15 perfect GPA’s apiece. Both the women’s soccer team and women’s track and field team had eight athletes earn a 4.0 GPA, as each team had a 3.44 cumulative average. The women’s swimming and diving team had seven members with a 4.0 during the fall and boasted the best team average at 3.53. The men’s tennis team edged out the men’s basketball team for highest GPA amongst the men’s teams with a 3.48 to a 3.44.

“The academic success of Carnegie Mellon’s student-athletes is staggering. I continue to be inspired by all they bring to our university community and the excellence that they achieve in multiple domains,” said Director of Athletics Josh Centor.

On top of the semester success, eight upperclassmen maintained cumulative GPA’s of 4.0. The success was widespread among the colleges, as 31 students with 4.0s were enrolled in the College of Engineering (CIT), 19 in the Tepper School of Business, 12 in Dietrich College, 10 in the Mellon College of Science (MCS), one in the College of Fine Arts (CFA) and School of Computer Science (SCS), and three in the interdisciplinary program from the School of Humanities and Sciences.

Competitively, five out of six teams made the postseason with four competing in their respective NCAA championship fields.

More than 55 percent of the women’s soccer team achieved a 3.50 or better, while excelling on the field to earn the program’s fifth straight bid to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s basketball team is currently ranked 15th in the nation with a record of 11-1 and had four athletes receive perfect marks in the fall to contribute to a team average of 3.43.
