Tartans Add Live Video Coverage for Men’s and Women’s Tennis

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Thanks to donor support, the Carnegie Mellon University Department of Athletics will significantly enhance the coverage of men’s and women’s tennis beginning this fall. The department has signed with PlaySight to install six video cameras on its campus courts, making Carnegie Mellon a leader in live video streaming in Division III tennis.

With PlaySight’s technology, all six courts will stream live during men’s and women’s tennis matches. The recorded video will also be stored for further viewing by both the coaching staff and players, allowing for a better way to analyze each player’s game. Similarly, the cameras also will be used to record and analyze practices.

“We believe that partnering with PlaySight is a top-of-market solution for webcasting intercollegiate tennis, and we are excited to remain on the cutting-edge of the intersection between technology and Division III athletics,” said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. “We are grateful to the donors who made this possible, and for all of the support that has created palpable energy and excitement surrounding our tennis program.”

With the addition of live video to the donor-funded video scoreboard installed in August 2015, Carnegie Mellon’s tennis facility rivals any other Division III facility in the country. Likewise, the tennis program will continue its competitive march into the national spotlight. For the past 10 years, both the men’s and women’s teams have finished the season ranked in the top 20, with one or both teams reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship six times.

“This donation builds upon the outstanding momentum we have going with our tennis programs,” head coach Andrew Girard said. “Over the past two years we have added the Ference Family video scoreboard and seen the creation of the Dr. Joel Spero and Dr. Janet Amico Endowed Tennis Fund from generous alumni and friends, and this just adds to the excitement the players are bringing to the court.”

The department has provided live stats during home tennis matches for more than a decade, and with the addition of PlaySight live video, now a parent, alumnus or friend will be able to connect even more with the athletes as they watch the match unfold.

“We’ve had, and still have, a number of players from around the nation, and for their families to have the ability to watch them play from home adds an exciting piece to our puzzle,” said Girard. “Now family, friends and alumni from around the world will be able to follow and connect with the program in a new and innovative way.”
