(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Following the most successful athletics year in program history, which brought Carnegie Mellon's first team national championship, the athletics department has announced the release of its new strategic plan. The plan outlines the department's primary goals and strategic roadmap for the next five years.

"I am thrilled to share the athletics department’s new strategic plan, which will guide our work through 2028," said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. "The strategic plan is the result of significant work and contributions from students, staff, alumni and our Tartan Athletics Club Board of Directors. I am especially grateful to our Student-Athlete Advisory Council for their contributions throughout the process."

The strategic plan has five primary goals:

  • Provide a learning environment for student-athletes to excel at the highest level of Division III Athletics.
  • Develop facilities that enhance competitive and learning opportunities for the Carnegie Mellon University community
  • Raise the visibility of Carnegie Mellon Athletics across campus and in the broader community.
  • Increase funding for the athletics department through donor engagement and revenue generation.
  • Serve as a model for diversity, equity and inclusive excellence in athletics and inspire action across the university.

In the fall, all six intercollegiate teams made their respective NCAA Championships for the first time in school history. The competitive success continued in the winter, and culminated in CMU's first individual national championship in 16 years, as Liz Barre won the indoor pentathlon at NCAAs. And then this spring, the men's golf program won the first team national title in university history. In Fall 2024, Carnegie Mellon will open the Highmark Center, a new athletics facility that will be the home for intercollegiate athletics.

"This is a special time in our athletics history, and the strategic plan will ensure we remain focused on the goals that we believe are most critical toward becoming one of the most successful programs in the nation," Centor said. "I can't wait to get started."
