Tartans Drop 78-58 Contest to Lebanon Valley

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team played Lebanon Valley College in the championship game of the DoubleTree Carnegie Mellon Tournament Sunday, November 27. The Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley came away with a 78-58 victory over the Tartans to claim the championship.  The loss moves the Tartans record to 3-2 while Lebanon Valley is now  4-1.

Over the first eleven minutes of play the lead changed sides five times and the score was tied three times.  With 8:57 remaining in the half, Lebanon Valley's Cameron Prince hit a three-point buckets that gave the visitor's a 19-17 lead.  Prince's trey started a 23-5 run for the Dutchmen to close out the half, as they took a 39-25 lead into the locker room.

The Tartans came out in the second half and cut the lead to 43-36 on a jumper by senior Joe Kromka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) with 15:01 left in the contest.  That is as close as the Tartans got, as Lebanon Valley scored 16 of the next 17 points over the next five minutes, taking its largest lead of the game, 59-37.   The Dutchmen maintained the double digit lead and went on for the 78-58 victory.

The Tartans shot 38.5% from the floor while Lebanon Valley shot 49.3%.  The Dutchmen controlled the boards, hauling in 42 to the Tartans 32.  

Kromka and sophomore Rashaun Riley (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) were named to the all-tournament team after leading the Tartans.  Kromka scored a career-high 18 points and hauled in seven rebounds. The senior also added a career-high four blocks.  Riley ended the game with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor.

Danny Brooks led the way for the Dutchmen with a game-high 23 points on his way to being named the DoubleTree Carnegie Mellon Tournament Most Valuable Player.  Joe Meehan chipped in with 14 points while being named to the all-tournament team.

The Tartans will be back in action, Wednesday November 30 as they travel to our nation's capital to play Catholic University. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
