Tartans Win Third Straight Defeating Otterbein 77-70

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted its annual DoubleTree Carnegie Mellon Tournament on Saturday, November 26.  In the opening round of play, all five starters scored in double figures as the Tartans defeated Otterbein University 77-70. The win improves the Tartans record to 3-1 while the Cardinals are now 1-2.  

Carnegie Mellon started the contest on an 11-0 run with four different players scoring during the stretch.  With the Tartans leading 15-5, the Cardinals scored nine unanswered making the score 15-14 with 8:48 left in the first twenty minutes of action.  Chris Davis scored five of his first-half high 14 points during the run.

The Tartans continued to maintain the lead the rest of the half and extended the it to 30-22 on a made fast break layup by sophomore Marshall Massengale (Mill Creek, Wash./Henry M. Jackson).  The Cardinals then scored the last four points of the half cutting the home teams lead in half at the break, 30-26.

A minute into the second half, Carnegie Mellon used an 11-2 run taking a 43-32 lead.  During the run senior John Duhring (Round Hill, Va./St. Maria Goretti) scored eight of his team-high 14 points.

The Tartans continued to lead throughout the rest of the game and led by as many as 13 points on two occasions.  The first coming after sophomore Sean Brophy (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) drained a three-point shot making the score 49-36 with 12:33 to play in the contest.  

Carnegie Mellon ended the game shooting 56% (28-50) from the floor to the Cardinals' 38% (28-73). Sophomore Christian Manoli (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) finished the game with 13 followed by senior Joe Kromka's (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) 12.  Brophy scored a career-high 11 while sophomore Rashaun Riley (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) chipped in with 10.  Kromka and Manoli led the Tartans on the glass as each tied a career-high with eight rebounds. Riley dished out a career-high six assists in the win.

Oterbein was led by Davis as he finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds.  Max Van Meter and Jason Davis had 14 and 10 points, respectively.
 
The Tartans move on to face Lebanon Valley College at 3:00 p.m. in the championship game of the DoubleTree Tournament on Sunday, November 27 at Skibo Gymnasium.
