Men’s Basketball Lose 83-68 at #8 Emory

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled south to play the #8 Eagles of Emory University Friday, January 20 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.  The Tartans fell 83-68 in a battle making their record 6-9, 1-3 while the Eagles move to 14-1, 3-1.

After falling behind 6-0 in the first minute of play, Carnegie Mellon took a 12-11 lead on senior John Duhring's (Round Hill, Va./St. Maria Goretti) second three-pointer of the game with 14:15 on the clock in the first half.

Emory retook the lead and held a 20-18 edge following a pair of foul shots by Tartan junior Andre Moore (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) at the 10:49 mark.  That was as close as the Tartans came the rest of the half, as the Eagles used a 12-4 run to grab its largest lead of the half, 32-22, and then took a 40-31 lead into the locker room.

The Tartans used a 10-0 run early in the second half to knot the score at 43-43 with 15:52 on the clock.  Senior Joe Kromka (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) and sophomore Christian Manoli (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) accounted for all the Tartan scoring during the scamper.  The visitor's then took their first lead since early in the game when Manoli connected on a foul shot with 14:23 left making the score 46-45.

With the Tartans leading 51-47, Emory went on a 12-3 run over a five minute stretch to regain the lead at 59-54 at the eight minute mark. Emory pushed its lead to 67-60 before the Tartans closed in on a trey by sophomore Asad Meghani (Dallas, Texas/The Greenhill School) cutting the lead to 69-65 with five to play in the contest.

That is as close as the Tartans got as the Eagles held on for the 83-68 win. Carnegie Mellon shot 43% from the floor to Emory's 38%. The home team controlled the glass 48-36.

Manoli led the Tartans with 18 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. Duhring and Moore also scored in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively.   

Alex Greven led a trio of Eagles in double figures with 22 while Jake Davis and Austin Claunch each added 19 for Emory.

The Tartans will continue UAA play Sunday, January 22 when they travel to Rochester, New York to face the Yellowjackets at 12:00 p.m.
