Men’s Basketball Drops UAA Contest at Chicago

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to the University of Chicago on Friday, February 12 and dropped a 94-59 University Athletic Association (UAA) contest. Carnegie Mellon is now 9-12 overall and 2-8 in UAA play while the Maroons move to 15-6, 6-4.

The first 17 minutes of play was even matched with neither team leading by more than three points.  With the score tied at 27-27 with 2:54 to play, Chicago began a streak where the home team scored 11 straight points to close the half and lead 38-27.  The last points of the run came as time expired when Tyler Howard drained a three-pointer.

At the break junior Chris Shkil (Mentor, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) led the Tartans with eight points after converting 4-of-5 from the floor while the Tartans shot 44.4% for the half.  Chicago shot 48.3% from the floor in the first frame including a 7-of-15 effort from behind the arc.  

Back-to-back three-pointers by Chicago along with a foul shot to start the second half pushed the home teams lead to 45-27.  The Maroons continued to have the hot hand making six of the first seven long balls of the second half and led 63-44 with 12:30 to play.  

The Tartans ended the game shooting 42.9% from the floor, as Chicago finished shooting 50.0% including 51.7% (15-29) from behind the arc.  Chicago held the edge on the glass hauling in 40 rebounds to the Tartans 24.

Shkil led the Tartans with 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior Kemal Dincer (Istanbul, Turkey/Texas Christian University) finished with eight points in the setback.

The Tartans will close out their UAA road slate with a 12:00 p.m. CT contest at Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, February 14.
