Serbin Records 16th Double-Double in Setback to Case Western Reserve

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team finished its season with a 93-87 setback to Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, February 27. Junior Jack Serbin (New Albany, Ohio) led the Tartans on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium with his 16th double-double of the season. The loss ends the Tartans season with a 10-15 record and 3-11 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) play while the Spartans end their campaign at 12-13, 5-9.

The first half saw the lead change sides eight times with the score tied on eight different occasions.  Serbin put the Tartans on top with three minutes to play in the half with a layup, as the Tartans held the lead the rest of the half.  The home team took a 42-40 advantage into the locker room.  At the break Serbin led all players with 22 points after converting 9-of-13 from the floor.

Two minutes into the second half, Carnegie Mellon started a 14-2 run that spanned over five minutes.  The spurt put the Cardinal and Gray ahead 60-48 with 12:48 to play.  During the span, five Tartans accounted for points.  Over the next three minute Case Western Reserve mounted a comeback and scored 11 of the next 13 points to cut the Tartans lead to 62-59.

Carnegie Mellon answered and pushed the lead back to double digits at 74-63 with seven minutes to play following a junior Matt Hillman (Gaithersburg, Md./Sidwell Friends) jumper.  The Spartans responded once again, going on a 14-3 run to knot the score at 77-77.  With 1:41 to play in the contest, David Black drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc that gave the visitor's the lead for good.  

Carnegie Mellon shot 48.4% from the floor to the Spartans 38.0% and held the edge on the glass 52-47.  Serbin led all players with 36 points and tied a season-best with 18 rebounds.  The junior finished the season scoring in double figures in 24 contests including seven games scoring 20 or more.    

Case Western Reserve had five players score in double figures with Matt Clark leading the charge with 27 points.
