Tartans Welcome Four Newcomers for 2018-19 Season

The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team will welcome four newcomers for the 2018-19 season. The Tartans return 12 players from last year's team, including four starters.  The four newcomers hail from New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Missouri. 

Charlie Tripp (6'1 Guard/ Mariemont High School, Cincinnati, OH)

2017-18 Stats: 19.7 PPG, 1.7 APG, 4.7 RPG, 2 SPG

Academic Achievements: Recognized for placing among the top students in the National High School of Business Economics exam 2017. Was a member of National Honor Society, Stock Club, Spanish Club and AFS Club. Also honored with Academic CHL Award.

Athletic Achievements: Charlie was team Captain and MVP during his senior campaign. He set the school record for 3's made in a game (10) and season (60). He was named 1s Team All-League, 1st Team All-District, and 3rd Team All-Southwest Ohio. He participated in the Ohio North vs South All-Star Game. He helped lead his team to an 11 win improvement from freshman year to junior year.

Why Carnegie Mellon?  I chose CMU because of the opportunity to learn from some of the best professors in the world, while also learning from a great coaching staff. When I visited I instantly felt at home with the team and the city. I can't wait to join the Tartan Family!

Will Powell (6'5 Forward/ Pembroke Hill High School, Kansas City, MO)

2017-18 Stats: 24 PPG, 7 RPG, 1 BPG

Academic Achievements: Maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school. Academic achievements and honors include National Merit Commended Scholar, AP Scholar with Distinction, Headmasters Distinctive Achievement and Headmasters Academic Scholarship.  

Athletic Achievements: Will started for four years and scored more than 1,300 career points. Named to Pleasant Hill All-Tournament team (2017, 2018) and 2018 All District 1st Team. Named The Raider Award Winner for Basketball this past year. (The Raider Award is awarded by Pembroke Hill to an athlete for their commitment, dedication, desire, and whose positive contributions have earned the respect of both teammates and coaches.)

Why Carnegie Mellon?  I chose Carnegie Mellon because I liked the feel of the basketball program and team. The school of the caliber of Carnegie Mellon offers amazing academic opportunities. Of course, being located in a great city like Pittsburgh is always a good thing too!

Paul Woolhouse (6'7 Forward/ North Hunterdon High School, Annandale, NJ)

2017-18 Stats: 11.2 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 2.9 BPG

Academic Achievements: Member of National Honor Society and achieved High Honors every year in high school.

Athletic Achievements:  Paul was a two-year team captain. He was named an All-State player to watch, 2nd team All-Skylands Conference and All-Area Honorable Mention as a senior.

Why Carnegie Mellon? I chose Carnegie Mellon University because I am going to major in business. The investment in the new Tepper School of Business shows an extreme dedication and commitment to provide the absolute best for the students enrolled in the business school. The environment of innovation, investment and dedication is something I wanted to be a part of. I also chose CMU because of the relationship I have with the coaching staff and other players on the team. That only helped solidify Carnegie Mellon being the place for me!

Tom Farkos (6'8 Forward, Central Catholic High School, Pittsburgh PA)

2017-18 Stats: 4 PPG, 3 RPG, 1.2 APG

Academic Achievements:  Tom was a member of the National Honor Society and achieved High Honors every year in High School.

Athletic Achievements: Tom helped Central Catholic win the WPIAL 6A North Section as a sophomore and last year as a senior starter.

Why Carnegie Mellon? Carnegie Mellon is unique to any other school in the country because of the marriage between being both a top technology school and top business school. This naturally creates an environment of entrepreneurship and innovation that I love! This coupled with my love of Pittsburgh and great basketball program made choosing Carnegie Mellon incredibly easy. I am excited for what lies ahead!
