Six Tartans Score in Double Figures as Carnegie Mellon Tops St. John Fisher 103-92

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted St. John Fisher University Tuesday night and topped the Cardinals 103-92, as six Tartans scored in double figures.

How it Happened

  • Midway through the first half, the Tartans led 23-9 following a fastbreak bucket from senior Jack Stone off a steal by junior Aidan Booher.
  • During the stretch to start the game, Carnegie Mellon went 9-of-18 from the floor while holding St. John fisher to 4-of-19.
  • The Tartans maintained control the rest of the first half and led by as many as 27 points (51-24) when Stone drained a triple with 1:34 to play that was part of 11 straight points scored by the home team.
  • Carnegie Mellon led by as many as 31 on two different occasions in the second half and then held a 72-42 advantage with 13:25 to play.
  • The Cardinals didn't leave Pittsburgh without a fight and pulled to within seven points (99-92) with 29 ticks on the clock, but the Tartans connected on four foul shots in the closing seconds to hold on for the 103-92 victory.

Tartan Stats

  • Carnegie Mellon shot 49.3% from the floor, including 43.8% (14-32) from behind the arc and 85.0% (17-20) from the foul line.
  • Six Tartans scored in double figures with sophomore Justin Allen leading the way with 24 points. Senior R.J. Holmes along with Stone each poured in 19 points. For Stone it marked a season-high.
  • Sophomore Buckley DeJardin finished with 12 while junior Jonathan Milloway ended with 10 points.
  • Holmes grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double in the win.

Cardinal Stats

  • St. John Fisher shot 47.5% from the floor while converting 8-of-19 (42.1%) from behind the arc and 8-of-13 (62.5%) from the foul line.
  • Daniel Cook led the Cardinals with a game-high 35 points on 16-of-28 shooting. Cook also led the Cardinals with eight rebounds.

Game Notes

  • The Tartans have now won eight straight contests when five or more players scored in double figures. It was the first time this season.
  • It was the fourth time since the 2005-06 season that six Tartans scored in double figures with all ending in victories. The last time was November 20, 2019, in an 87-84 win over Bethany College at home.
  • The Tartans improve to 25-2 since the 1947-48 season when scoring 100 or more points in a contest. They have won four straight when doing so.
  • Holmes' double-double was his second this season and 17th of his career.
