Tartans Drop Exhibition Contest at Division II Walsh

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to North Canton, Ohio on Friday to play Division II Walsh University in an exhibition contest. The Tartans dropped a 75-65 decision to the Cavaliers.

How it Happened

  • Following a jumper by sophomore Buckley DeJardin to start the game, Walsh rattled off nine straight points and led 9-2 five minutes into the contest.
  • With 7:08 on the clock in the first half, Walsh held a 28-17 advantage, its largest of the first twenty minutes.
  • Carnegie Mellon then scored six straight points, a traditional three-point play by senior R.J. Holmes and a triple off the hands of freshman Dylan Bronner to make the score 28-23.
  • The Cavaliers then took a 35-29 lead into the locker room.
  • Walsh opened the second half scoring five of the first six points to push its lead back to double digits at 40-30 and then took the largest lead of the game at 60-45 with 7:34 to play.
  • The Tartans answered scoring 11 straight to make the score 60-56 with 5:13 on the clock. During the run, senior Jack Stone accounted for nine straight points starting with a traditional three-point play and then connected on two from behind the arc.
  • At the 2:08 mark, Walsh hit a long ball and then converted a pair of foul shots which made the score 69-60 and then the Cavaliers converted 6-of-6 from the foul line to seal a 75-65 victory.

Tartan Stats

  • Carnegie Mellon shot 39.0% (23-59) from the floor and 31.0% (9-21) from behind the arc.
  • At the foul line the Tartans converted 10-of-12 for 83.3%.
  • Stone and Holmes were the lone Tartans to score in double figures. Stone put in 19 and Holmes 14.
  • Junior Jonathan Milloway led the Tartans with eight rebounds while Holmes had seven along with three blocks.

Cavalier Stats

  • Walsh shot 37.1% (23-62) from the floor and 32.0% (8-25) from behind the arc.
  • At the foul line the home team converted 21-of-23 for 91.3%.
  • Kobe Mitchell led all players with 23 points.
  • Logan Murray finished with 11 points while Milan Square scored 10.
