Tartans Dominate Overtime to Top Rochester; Holmes Records 1,000th Point
(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted the University of Rochester on Friday, February 16, winning in overtime, 87-70, as senior R.J. Holmes scored his 1,000th career point and sophomore Justin Allen was perfect in the extra frame. The Tartans are now 7-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) and 15-8 overall while the Yellowjackets are 10-13 overall and 4-8 in the league.
How It Happened
- Senior Jack Stone led the Tartans in scoring in the first half with 10 points, as the team trailed the Yellowjackets by four, 35-31.
- Tomiwa Adetosoye led the Yellowjackets with 12 points, as the team shot 45.7% from the floor and grabbed 28 rebounds to 19 for the Tartans.
- Rochester led by 10 points twice in the first half after a 10-point run put them up 12-2 five minutes and 20 seconds into the game and later 12-4 run to lead 28-18 with 5:22 left to play.
- Three triples and a layup brought the Tartans back to a three-point deficit with 1:31 to go in the half.
- After senior R.J. Holmes cut it to two points with a pair of free throws with nine seconds to go, Rochester's Adetosoye drove the length of the court and hit a layup as time expired to close the scoring.
- The Tartans opened the second half making 4-of-6 from the floor to take a 39-35 lead with two baskets coming off the hand of sophomore Justin Allen.
- After junior Nolan Casey made it 41-37, the Yellowjackets went on a 12-0 run to lead by eight points with 13:44 to play.
- A 7-0 run by the Tartans which included a three-pointer and a layup by Allen brought the deficit back to one point a minute and four seconds later.
- Rochester maintained the lead and pushed it to seven points with a dunk by Logan Jagodzinski with just under nine minutes left in the game.
- Back-to-back points in the paint by Casey put the Tartans ahead by one, 60-59, with 4:16 to go.
- The last four minutes saw one lead change and three ties with Holmes tying the score at 67-all with a pair of free throws after grabbing an offensive board off a missed free throw by Allen.
- It was Holmes who grabbed the final rebound of regulation after the Yellowjackets couldn't get their shot attempt or tip-in to fall with three seconds to go.
- Rochester scored the first points of overtime before Allen ran off six straight and then dished off a pass for a left-corner three by junior Aidan Booher for a seven-point lead.
- Sophomore Buckley DeJardin then drained a three-pointer from the right corner off an inbounds pass by Booher to make it a nine-point game which the Tartans stretched to 17 points by the end of overtime.
- Casey and Allen took over the game for the Tartans in the second half with Casey grabbing seven rebounds, five offensive, and scoring 10 points, and Allen making 50.0% off his attempts for 13 points.
For the Tartans
- Allen finished the game with 31 points after scoring 10 of the team's 20 points in overtime.
- Stone ended the game with 17 points and five steals.
- Holmes collected his 19th career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and had a career-best five blocks.
- Casey's second-half performance had him finish with 10 points and eight rebounds.
For the Yellowjackets
- Adetosoye finished with 18 points and four assists.
- Corvin Oprea tallied 18 points with three three-pointers.
- Jagodzinski recorded 12 points and the Tartans held Matt Wiele, who averages 14.5 points a game, to seven points.
Notes
- Holmes recorded his 1,000th career point in the game with a layup that made the score 54-50 Rochester with 9:38 to go in the second half.
- Holmes is the 21st Tartan to score at least 1,000 career points and he now has 1,003.
- Holmes is the 12th Tartan to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. He now has 585 rebounds and is 12th all-time.
- Allen is now eight points off the school's single-season scoring record of 514 points held by George Harvey (1976-77).
- Allen has scored 20 or more points in seven straight contests and scored more than 30 in three games this year.
- The Tartans last swept the season series with Rochester in 2014.
