Qian Earns Third PING All-America Honor

(NORMAN, Okla.) – For the third straight season, senior George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team has been recognized as a NCAA Division III PING All-America by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). This year, Qian lands a spot on the third team after being named honorable mention the previous two seasons.

Qian, who was named a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award, placed 30th at the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship where he recorded the best finish ever by a Tartan. Qian was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) 2017 Academic All-American Men's At-Large Team earlier this month. He is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree who, in May, earned PING Mid-Atlantic Region honors for the fourth time and was named a Cleveland/Srixon All-America Scholar for the second time.

He finished the season with a team-best average round of 74.2 through 25 rounds with a tournament win, three top-three finishes and five top-ten finishes. At the Wynlakes Intercollegiate in late March, Qian tied the single-round school record with his opening-round score of five-under par 67. He finished the Wynlakes with a two-round score of seven-under par 137, which broke the school record for the lowest 36-hole event.

The senior opened spring play claiming UAA Most Valuable Player honors at the 2017 UAA Match-Play Championships after winning both of his matches. His play to start the spring earned him Division III Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's Golfer of the Month for March.

Qian's honor is the fifth for the Carnegie Mellon men's golf program, as Ian and Paul Bangor are the only other All-Americans in Tartan golf history. Ian achieved the honor in 2013 while his father Paul received the distinction in 1985.
