Zhang Named UAA Men’s Golf Rookie of the Year; Scavone and Xu Named to All-UAA Squad

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Freshman David Zhang of the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team has been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Rookie of the Year, as voted on by the association coaches. Zhang, also a first-team selection, is joined by graduate Henry Scavone on the first team and junior Brian Xu who garnered second team accolades.

The Tartans currently rank fourth nationally in the latest Division III Golfstat rankings and will compete in their sixth NCAA Championship Tournament and fourth straight.

Zhang becomes the fourth Tartan to garner UAA Rookie of the Year honors. He currently leads the Cardinal and Gray and ranks 16th in Division III as an individual with an adjusted scoring average of 73.20 through 22 rounds played. He has recorded eight rounds of even par or lower this season including a season-low round of four-under par 68 during round two of the Jekyll Island Collegiate.

Scavone is tied for second on the team with a scoring average of 73.8 through 22 rounds. He claimed his first collegiate individual medalist honors after winning a seven-hole playoff at the Western Pennsylvania Intercollegiate in April. During the second round of the Western Pennsylvania Intercollegiate, Scavone carded the lowest individual round in the program's history with a seven-under par 63. At the UAA Match Play Championship, Scavone was named the tournament Most Valuable Golfer after winning both of his matches in leading the Tartans to their second Association Championship in program history.

Xu is tied with Scavone for second on the team with a scoring average of 73.8 while also competing in all 22 rounds. The junior recorded his collegiate-low round of four-under par 68 during round two of The Visit Florence Intercollegiate where he ended tied for second individually in a field of 96 golfers with a four-under 212. Xu has recorded eight rounds of even par or better this season.
