Men’s Golf Looks to Defend Title at NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team has been selected to compete in the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The championships will be held May 14-17 at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Neveda, on the Desert Hawk-Coyote Run Golf Courses. The University of Nevada and Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority will be hosting the four-day event.

This will mark the seventh appearance by the Tartans at the championships and fifth straight. Last season, the Tartans captured the first team NCAA Division III Championship in university history. The Cardinal and Gray trailed by eight strokes heading into the final round and then recorded the lowest round of the tournament by any team of nine-under par on the last day. In 2022, the Tartans placed sixth, while in 2021 the team ended the championships in fourth. The 2009 team finished 22nd, the 2017 team ended play 31st at the national event and the 2019 team placed 11th.

A total of 221 participants will compete at the 2023 championships. Thirty-four conferences were awarded an automatic qualification for the championships. One team was selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final eight berths were reserved for Pool C, which are institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams. The six individuals are selected from the remaining players who have not qualified with a team.

The Tartans currently third fourth nationally in the latest Division III rankings Play begins on Tuesday, May 14 with round two to follow on Wednesday, May 15. Following 36 holes of play, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals. The final 18 teams will vie for the 2024 national championship with round three being played Thursday, May 16 and the fourth and final round on Friday, May 17.
