Tartans End Home Season with Double OT Loss

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team was defeated Sunday in a double overtime contest with Brandeis University, 2-1, in University Athletic Association (UAA) action. Sunday's loss was the final game for the senior class at home. The Tartans' record falls to 6-8-1 (2-4 UAA) on the 2011 season as Brandeis improves to 11-5-1 (2-3-1).

The Tartans' lone goal came in the 22nd minute when junior forward Alex Abedian (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) received a pass from senior midfielder Kyle Young (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). Abedian controlled the ball with defenders on either side of him. With a touch off his right foot, he beat the goalkeeper to the near post putting the Tartans up 1-0. The goal was Abedian's third of the season. Young, playing in his final home game, picked up the assist on the goal.

Only nine minutes later, Brandeis had its best opportunity of the first half to tie the game. The Judges' Steve Keuchkarian missed the goal to the right in the 31st minute.

In the second half, Brandeis would pick up its play looking for the tying goal. Theo Terris put a shot on goal that appeared headed for the back of the net before it was stopped by the Tartans' sophomore goalkeeper Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) diving to his left for the save.

The Judges would eventually find the equalizing goal in the 75th minute on a rebound goal scored by Terris. Tyler Savonen put the initial shot on the Carnegie Mellon net before Terris cleaned up the rebound to tie the score.

After a scoreless first overtime period, both teams came out looking for the golden goal in the second ten minute period. Brandeis sent a free kick from 25 yards into the box that was deflected off the head of a Tartan and into the net giving the Judges the 2-1 victory.

The Tartans have one more game in the 2011 season, which will be next Saturday, November 5, at Emory University.
