Four Tartans Honored on All-Great Lakes Region Team

(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) – Four Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer players were honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on the 2012 NCAA Division III Men All-Great Lakes Region Team. Junior Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) heads the list as a first-team selection.

The Tartans finished the 2012 campaign in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship with an overall mark of 13-4-1 and a national ranking of 18. Tassano led the team with 11 goals and five assists for 27 points and recorded a hat-trick against Bethany College. The junior earns the region honor for the first time as he was also selected to the University Athletic Association (UAA) first team.

Joining Tassano on the all-region team is junior Matt Sarett (Huntersville, N.C./Cannon) and seniors Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) and John Crawshaw (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton). Sarett was named to the second team as a midfielder. He tallied three goals and two assists, one of which came in the Tartans' NCAA second round game against Ohio Northern. The junior scored the game winner against Bethany and began the Tartans' scoring this season with a goal against Hobart College in the season opener. Sarett was also a UAA first-team selection.

Bryant and Crawshaw were named to the third team as a defender and midfielder, respectively. Bryant was a second-team selection to the All-UAA team and finished the year second in points with 21, scoring five goals and recording 11 assists. The outside back assisted on all three goals in a 3-0 win over Washington & Jefferson College and tallied two game-winning goals.

Crawshaw, an All-UAA first-team honoree, helped control the midfield for the Tartans and scored four goals while assisting on one. Two of his goals were game winners including the lone goal in a 1-0 win over nationally ranked Stevens Institute of Technology which propelled the Tartans into the national rankings after the second game of the season. The senior tallied the last goal of his career in the Tartans' NCAA first round win over Morrisville State College.
