No. 23 Tartans Top No. 12 Brandeis in Extra Time

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The No. 23 Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team defeated No. 12 Brandeis University 2-1 in overtime Friday afternoon in Univesity Athletic Association (UAA) action in Pittsburgh. An own goal by Brandeis (11-3, 1-2) after a Carnegie Mellon (9-2-1, 2-1) shot resulted in the game winner nearly four minutes into overtime.

The battle of top UAA teams and nationally ranked opponents was not decided in the first 90 minutes of action as Carnegie Mellon knotted the score at 1-1 in the 78th minute, seven minutes after Brandeis took the lead.

In the 70th minute, Brandeis earned a corner kick that Michael Soboff played short to the corner of the 18-yard box to Ben Applefield who took a left-footed shot on goal that was pushed over the crossbar by senior keeper Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall). The ensuing cornerkick by Kyle Feather was promptly headed in by Conor Lanahan for the 1-0 Brandeis lead.

Brandeis nearly took a two-goal lead two minutes later when Tudor Livadaru hit a shot from 23 yards out that Madden dove high and saved by pushing the ball toward the sideline.

In the 78th minute, the Tartans played the ball over the top where freshman midfielder Tristan Lockwood (Victor, N.Y./Victor) settled it and got by a recovering defender. A touch forward by Lockwood was challenged by Brandeis keeper Joe Graffy and Tartan senior Jerome Reano (Albuquerque, N.M./Saint Pius X). Reano got to it first as Graffy slid and the ball scooted under Graffy as Reano bounced to his feet and finished a shot to the open net.

In overtime, a shot by Brandeis's Josh Hacunda at 93:26 was high and led to a goal kick that preceded the Tartans first opportunity of the extra frame.

Twenty-five seconds later, senior Mike Ferraco (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) played a low cross into the box that was defended by a Brandeis player but right to the foot of Tartan senior Chris Wysocki (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy). Wysocki promptly took a shot that Graffy saved but deflected off his own teammate and into the net resulting in the Tartans' win.

The Tartans will play their final home game of the season on Sunday, October 20 when New York University visits the Pittsburgh campus for an 11:00 a.m. start.
