Three Tartans Named CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - Three Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer players have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Senior Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) and senior Matt Sarett (Huntersville, N.C./Cannon) are making a repeat appearance while senior Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) is honored for the first time.

Carnegie Mellon is part of District 4 which is comprised of all Division III schools in the state of Pennsylvania. All three now move on to the national ballot for Capital One Academic All-America recognition.

Bryant is a senior defender with one goal and three assists this season. He is an anchor to the defense that has recorded eight shutouts and allowed just eight goals with a team goals against average of 0.59. The goal he scored this season tied the match against the University of Chicago. Off the field, Bryant carries a 3.65 GPA in chemistry and Hispanic studies and minors in biomedical engineering and business administration. For two summers he worked at University of Pittsburgh's and University of Toledo's School's of Medicine and shadowed an orthopedic surgeon in a clinic and operating room. Bryant's research was published in the medical journal called Endocrinology this past February. He is a member of Phi Sigma Iota (Foreign Language Honor Society), Student-Athlete Advisory Council and Health Professions Program. Additionally, Bryant serves on the Academic Review Board and was the Co-President of the Carnegie Mellon "Best Buddies" chapter, a non-profit outreach organization that creates opportunities for relationships, employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Last spring, Bryant studied abroad in Chile. This academic honor is the second of Bryant's career as he was also named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Second Team last year. In addition, Bryant is a two-year team captain and was an All-Great Lakes Region Third Team honoree and second team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) player last year.

Sarett is a four-year starter who has two goals and one assist this season. Last year he was an All-UAA First Team honoree and was named to the All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. Off the field, Sarett has a 4.0 GPA and is a double major in electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering while taking classes towards his master's degree in electrical and computer engineering. He is also pursuing a minor in business administration and computer science. Sarett has held multiple internships including working as a software development engineer for Microsoft last summer. The senior also worked at McGuire Nuclear Station on the Cyber Security Assessment Team and as a biological research student and course assistant for principles of computing, teaching students on campus. He is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, CMU Odyssey Program, Eta Kappa Nu Electrical & Computer Engineering Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society this semester. The two-year team captain was also named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America First Team last year.

Madden is a two-year starter at goalkeeper for the Tartans who has accumulated a record of 8-2-1 this year with five shutouts and a goals against average of 0.73. He has been named UAA Athlete of the Week twice this year and has a career record of 21-8-2. Off the field, Madden is an academic development tutor who interned for Stanley Black & Decker as a DIY Brand March Research Intern last summer. He has continued to work for Stanley Black & Decker remotely this fall for 15 hours a week. In the past he was the marketing intern for Pivnet Internet Interactive Services. The senior spearheaded the first Carnegie Mellon Men's Soccer Mentorship Program and is a member of the Undergraduate Finance Association.

The Tartans are currently 10-2-1 overall and ranked 12th in the nation. They travel to Case Western Reserve University tonight for a 5:00 p.m. match before playing at No. 14 University of Rochester on Sunday, November 3 at 11:00 a.m.
