Carnegie Mellon’s Sarett Receives NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Senior Matt Sarett (Huntersville, N.C./Cannon) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Sarett will receive a one-time, nonrenewable grant of $7,500 to be used for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at a university or professional school.

The scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.

"We are extremely proud of all that Matt has accomplished academically, athletically and in the community during his time at Carnegie Mellon," said Interim Director of Athletics Josh Centor. "He is a tremendous young man and a wonderful student leader. This is well-deserved recognition for all of his hard work and success."

Sarett currently holds a 4.0 GPA as a double major in electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering and is pursuing his 5-year master's in electrical and computer engineering while minoring in business administration and computer science. He is a two-time Capital One Academic All-American and will return to Carnegie Mellon to complete his postgraduate work.

While Sarett has excelled in the classroom, he has also made a name for himself on the soccer field. The four-year starter finished his career with two goals and two assists this past season and his second selection to the University Athletic Association (UAA) All-Association First Team and All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. Following his senior campaign, he was also named to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Men's Soccer All-Star Team. The two-year team captain finished his career with six goals and nine assists as he led the team to two NCAA postseason wins in back-to-back seasons and a UAA Championship.

Sarett has held multiple internships including working as a software development engineer for Microsoft last summer. The senior also worked at McGuire Nuclear Station on the Cyber Security Assessment Team and as a biological research student and course assistant for principles of computing, teaching students on campus. He is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, CMU Odyssey Program, Eta Kappa Nu Electrical & Computer Engineering Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society this semester while being a devoted member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council for the past three years.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
