Tartans Battle Hard in Double-Overtime Loss to #7 Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) -The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team battled seventh-ranked Brandeis University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest, falling in double overtime 1-0. The overtime contest marked the third straight for the Tartans who are now 7-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in UAA play while Brandeis improved to 13-1 and 2-1.

Senior keeper Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) made one save in the first half when Brandeis' Mike Lynch put a header on goal following a free kick in the 25th minute.

The Tartans got their first shot off at the start of the second half when junior Dimitrije Slavkovic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) had a shot blocked. Three minutes later, senior midfielder Jakob Rohwer (Southborough, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) blasted a shot from 25 yards that was high of the goal.

In the 55th minute, a shot by Brandeis' Josh Ocel hit the crossbar while Rohwer put a shot on goal for the Tartans in the 59th minute. Keeper Joe Gaffy led a counter-attack by Brandeis which led to a shot by Evan Jastremski that Rice saved at the near post.

Rice made two other saves for the period, including a diving stop with 1:55 to play, keeping the shutout and sending the game into overtime.

Gaffy came up big for the Judges at the tail end of the first overtime when he made back-to-back saves on shots by junior midfielder Connor Webb (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) and freshman midfielder Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) in the 98th minute.

It wasn't until 3:45 remained that Brandeis was able to break through as Zach Vieira beat Rice one-on-one to the lower right corner after he picked up a flicked on pass by Patrick Flahive.

The loss marked the Tartans first in seven games and first goal given up by Rice in three games.

The Tartans remain on the road and face New York University on Sunday, October 19 at 11:00 a.m.
