Tartans Begin Competition at Total Performance Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team traveled to Kenyon College for the first day of the Total Performance Invitational on Thursday, December 3. The Tartans swam against Division I schools, Davidson College and University of Pennsylvania, and Division III schools, DePauw University, Kenyon, and Johns Hopkins University.

The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), sophomore Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), senior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), and junior Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) swam a season-best 1:33.65 to finish 11th.

Freshman Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) competed in the 1,650-yard freestyle and placed 10th in a time of 15:48.97. Sophomore Josh Taekman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) was 21st overall in 16:18.93 while freshman Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) finished the distance freestyle in 16:28.74.

The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Riek, Geier, senior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods), and freshman Jack Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) touched 12th in 6:54.32 in the team's first effort in the event all season.

Competition continues Friday with preliminaries in the morning and finals in the evening.
