Tartans Hold Fifth Place Before Final Day of UAA Championships

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team continued competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday, February 19. The Tartans moved to fifth place after 13 events.

Freshman Winston Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) had the top finish of the evening for the Tartans when he earned All-UAA third-team honors in the 100-yard breaststroke. His time of 56.51 provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships. Chu's brother, Matthew, finished fifth in the event in 56.98 but recorded a new school record of 56.41 in the preliminaries. Along with the Chu brothers, freshman Jack Dangremond (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) swam in the finals, touching in 56.98 to tie Matthew for fifth place.

Senior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) competed in the finals of the 400-yard IM, finishing sixth overall in a season-best time and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:03.72. Freshman Jack Lance (Lititz, Pa. / Warwick) also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400-yard IM, finishing the race in 4:05.63 to place 10th.

Senior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) swam to a 10th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle when he touched in a season-best time of 1:42.17. In the 100-yard butterfly, junior Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) placed 12th in 50.93 before following that with a 14th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.51.

The 200-yard medley relay team swam to a season-best 1:32.81 to place fifth to open the finals session Friday night, as the 800-yard freestyle relay finished sixth in a season-best 6:51.87.

The final night of competition is Saturday with seven events on the schedule.
