Riek Returning to NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) will once again compete at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The 2017 championships will be hosted by the City of Shenandoah and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in Shenandoah, Texas, on March 15-18.

Riek earned his place in the field by having the 11th best time in the nation in the 200-yard butterfly. His time of 1:49.5 is two seconds off his career-best time set at the NCAA Championships last year when he placed third in the event.

The sophomore will also swim the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. He is currently 15th and 16th, respectively, in those events. Last year, Riek finished seventh at the NCAA Championships in the 1,650-yard freestyle and ninth in the 500-yard freestyle.

Sophomore diver Gabe Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) is the first alternate for Region 4 and received word Monday, March 6 that he will once again have the chance to compete at the NCAA Championships. Last year, Bamforth placed 16th on the 3-meter board to earn All-America Honorable Mention.
