Tartans Face Pitt and Clarion at Western PA Invite

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team competed against the University of Pittsburgh and Clarion University on Saturday, January 25 at the Western PA Invite hosted by Pitt.

Diving kicked off the meet on Friday, January 24 with sophomore James Kyle (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal School) finishing fourth on the 1-meter board with a final score of 267.85 after six dives. Freshman Matthew Wagner (Mason, Ohio / Wiliam Mason) was fifth with 258.70 points. Kyle finished third on the 3-meter board with 276.80 points with Wagner finishing fifth again with 231.65 points.

Sophomore Richard Dauksher (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) was third to finish the 1,000-yard freestyle when he touched in a season-best time of 9:45.76.

Freshman John McNab (Westport, Conn. / Staples) was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.92 with sophomore Doug Heymann (Lake Oswego, Ore. / Lake Oswego) in third in 1:43.19. McNab also swam the 500-yard freestyle and finished third in 4:41.60.

Junior Justin Britton (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason) swam the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 50.37 with freshman Mason Loyet (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo) touching fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 57.66 to lead the Tartans. Loyet later finished the 200-yard breaststroke in another season-best time when he touched in 2:06.08 to place fourth.

Freshman Max Ryaguzov (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) had a season-best time in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.18 while Heymann collected a season-best time in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.51.

Another season-best was achieved by freshman Lee Poirier (Skillman, N.J. / Montgomery) in the 100-yard butterfly when he touched sixth in 51.18. Junior James Kirkby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) was just behind him in seventh with his own season-best time of 51.35.

Ryaguzov finished the meet with a fourth-place showing in the 200-yard IM in a season-best time of 1:53.92.

The Tartans will next host Johns Hopkins University for senior day on Saturday, February 1 at 1:00 p.m.
