Smith, Heaney-Secord and Erra-Hernandez Named UAA Athletes of the Week

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Freshman Mark Smith (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central), junior Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) and senior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) were each named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week in their respective sports for their performance during the last week. Smith earned the award for men's swimming, Heaney-Secord for men's tennis and Erra-Hernandez for men's track and field.

Smith swam to two second-place finishes and one third-place finish as the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team took on University of Pittsburgh, Clarion University and Grove City College at Pittsburgh, Saturday, February 1. Smith swam to a season-best in the 100-yard butterfly as he touched second in 52.05 seconds. His other second-place finish came in the 200-yard IM in a time of 1:58.41, while he touched third in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.28.

Heaney-Secord led the men's tennis team, ranked 19th in the nation, to an 8-1 win over Division I Robert Morris University in the team's first action of the semester on Friday, January 31. The junior paired with junior Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) at first doubles to win 8-3 and later sealed the win for the Tartans at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win.

Erra-Hernandez picked up a first and second-place finish at the Sixth Annual Battle of the Obelisk against Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, February 1, as the Tartans won for the second straight year. His first-place finish came in the shot put where he threw the element a season-best 15.42m, crushing the competitors by 1.39m. He later finished second in the weight throw with a career-best toss of 16.07m, nearly one meter farther than his previous best.
