Tartans Fall to Duquesne 7-2

(MONROEVILLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team battled with Division I Duquesne University on Friday, February 7 at The Club in Monroeville, Pa. The Tartans are now 5-2 on the season with a 2-1 record against non-Division III opponents.

The two Tartan wins came at No. 3 doubles and No. 1 singles by way of sophomores Paul Okuda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Punahou), Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) and Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School).

Okuda and Kumar won 9-8 (8-1) over Rich Robbie and Mehdi Mekaoui while Alla defeated Robbie 7-6(7-5), 6-4.

Freshman Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) played a tough match against Max Rubin at No. 5 singles as Rubin needed to win the second set via a tiebreaker to win 6-4, 7-6(7-5). Kumar also played a second set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles, falling 6-2, 7-6(7-5) to Mekaoui.

The team will take a break from competition until Saturday, February 22 when it faces West Virginia Wesleyan College at The Club in Monroeville.
