Tartans Grab 9-0 Win Over West Virginia Wesleyan

(MONROEVILLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team, ranked 19th in the nation, defeated another out-of-division opponent today when it swept through doubles and singles to take down Division II West Virginia Wesleyan College, 9-0. The Tartans improve to 6-2 on the season.

Starting with doubles play, the Tartans won 8-2 at both No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles as junior Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) and freshman Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King) paired at No. 1 and freshmen Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) and Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) played at No. 2.

Senior Julian Pearlman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and sophomore Abhishek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) withstood a stance from Nathan Savil and Jacobo Rendon at No. 3 doubles to win 9-8 (8-0).

In singles play, Kirkov did not surrender a game at No. 3 singles while Zheng won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 and Wadwani 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.

Alla also moved his singles record to 15-2 on the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.

The Tartans travel to the Boardman Tennis Center in Boardman, Ohio, to face Division I Youngstown State University at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 23 before having off until spring break begins on March 9.
