Freshmen Win Points in Tartans Loss to Youngstown State

(BOARDMAN, Ohio) - The No. 19 Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team traveled north to Boardman, Ohio to face Division I Youngstown State University on Sunday, February 23. The Tartans dropped the contest 5-2 as doubles count as one point in Division I scoring.

The Tartans had the chance to take doubles but were unable to finish off the No. 2 and No. 3 positions after tiebreakers were forced in both matches.

Junior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and freshman Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King) went to a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles, falling 8-7 (7-3) while sophomores Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) and Paul Okuda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Punahou) fell 8-7 (7-5) at No. 3 doubles.

The Tartans earned their two points in singles play as freshman Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and freshman Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) won 3-6, 6-0, 10-8 at No. 6 singles.

The team will next travel to California and face Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday, March 9.
