No. 19 Tartans Open Spring Break with Sweep of Stevens
(CLAREMONT, Calif.) - The No. 19 Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team opened its annual spring break trip with a 9-0 sweep of Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday, March 9 in Claremont, California. The Tartans are now 8-3 on the season while the Ducks are 2-5.
The Tartans played well throughout the match and it started with doubles play as the No. 3 pair of sophomore Paul Okuda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Punahou) and freshman Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King) opened with an 8-2 win. The No. 1 pair of juniors Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) and Christian Heaney-Secord (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) then won 8-2 before junior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and sophomore Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Kirkov started things with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles while freshman Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles just ahead of freshman Kunal Wadwani's (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
Heaney-Secord won the seventh point for the Tartans at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-3, finishing ahead of Duncan at No. 3 singles. Duncan won his match 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore Abhisek Alla (Hyderabad, India/IMG Pendleton School) completed the match sweep at No. 1 singles, winning in a third-set tiebreaker 10-8 after winning the first set 7-5 and falling in the second set 6-2.
The Tartans continue action on Monday, March 10 at 1:00 p.m. PT against 11th-ranked Bowdoin College in Claremont.
