Men’s Tennis Battles Defending National Champion Amherst to the End

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team hosted the defending national champions, the Jeffs of Amherst College, on Sunday, October 12.  The Tartans battled the Jeffs to the end, but came up short falling 5-4.  Carnegie Mellon concludes its fall schedule with a mark of 3-1 while Amherst improves to 2-0.

After falling behind 1-0 in doubles play, the Tartans won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a 2-1 advantage into singles play.  The No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Will Duncan (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) and sophomore Jack Kasbeer (Lake Forest, Ill./Deerfield) won 8-4 over Russell Einbinder and Michael Solimano to tie the score.  Shortly after knotting the score, Carnegie Mellon's top doubles pair of senior Bryce Beisswanger (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint School) and junior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) won 8-5 over Aaron Revzin and Andrew Scheiner.

Amherst claimed the first three points in singles play winning at No.1, No. 3 and No. 6 in straight sets to take a 4-2 advantage. Sophomore Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won at No. 4 single sin straight sets beating Einbinder 6-3, 6-3 to pull the Tartans to within a point at 4-3.

No. 2 and no. 5 singles both went to a third set as Amherst's Revzin defeated Duncan 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-1 to seal the Jeffs victory right before Carnegie Mellon sophomore Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) downed Scheiner 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.
