Belmonte Promoted to Associate Head Coach of Men's and Women's Tennis

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Mike Belmonte, who has helped the Carnegie Mellon University men's and women's tennis programs become two of the nation's best, has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.

"Mike has been an integral part of the sustained high-level national success of both of our tennis programs during his seven years with us," said head coach Andrew Girard. "He has been instrumental in many of our innovations and improvements over that time period.  I am looking forward to seeing him even further excel in this well-deserved and expanded role."

During the past seven years, five of which Belmonte has served in a full-time capacity, the men's and women's tennis teams have been a mainstay on the national stage. The women's team has reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship five times and have finished the year ranked in the national top 10 six times, including this past season when the team finished ranked sixth. The women won the inaugural Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Indoor Team Championship in Belmonte's first season, while finishing second the past four years.

On the men's side, Belmonte has assisted the team to three NCAA Championship appearances, including one quarterfinal finish. The team has earned a top 20 national ranking each year he's been with the program. In total, Belmonte has mentored 35 All-Americans with at least one member from each program representing the university at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships each season.

Outside of in-match strategy building, Belmonte has helped engineer the nutrition and strength and conditioning programs for the teams, while assisting with recruiting.

Belmonte has also received regional and national recognition for his coaching, as he was named the 2009 ITA National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year, the 2012 ITA National Women's Assistant Coach of the Year and the 2014 ITA Atlantic South Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
