Tartans Show Well Against Duquesne in Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team began the 2015-16 season with an invitational against Duquesne University on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12. Friday's competition was played outside on Carnegie Mellon's courts while Saturday's play was inside at the Alpha Tennis in Harmarville, Pennsylvania.

Four Tartans won two singles matches apiece with junior Kunal Wadwani (Saratoga, Calif./Ballarmine College Prep) leading the way with a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Harry Walshe and an 8-1 win against Dane Bendel.

Freshman Vayum Arora (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose) went 2-1 in singles matches and 2-0 in doubles play. He defeated Andrew Ong 6-3, 6-2 to begin his career and then topped Bendel 6-4, 6-1. In doubles, he paired with sophomore Andrew Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./Saint Francis) to win 6-2 and junior Kiril Kirkov (Tampa, Fla./C. Leon King) to win 6-3.

Sophomore Edward Ang (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) also won twice in singles play, defeating Drew Akins 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 and Carson France 8-0.

Freshman Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School) picked up a pair of singles wins and a doubles victory in his first outing as a Tartan. He topped Chris Corrao in three sets, winning 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 10-6, and Akins 9-8 (7-3). In doubles, he played with senior Yuvraj Kumar (New Delhi, India/Millfield School) and won 6-1 against Adam Blasinsky and Corrao.

The Tartans will be in action again on Friday, September 18 at Grove City College for their first dual match of the year.
