#7 Tartans Drop Close Match at DI Youngstown State

(BOARDMAN, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team, ranked seventh in Division III, traveled north to Boardman, Ohio, to face Division I Youngstown State University at the Boardman Tennis Center on Saturday, February 18 and fell in a close match, 5-2. The match was the fifth straight for the Tartans against a Division I or II opponent.

The Tartans, now 4-4 on the year, lost the doubles point but won at number three doubles by a 6-4 score behind the performance by freshman Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar).

In singles play, sophomore Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill./Boca Prep International School) won, 6-1, 6-4, at the number one position while senior Kenny Zheng (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) won at the number two position, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4).

Downing's match at number three singles went to a third set tiebreaker that he lost after forcing the third set with a 7-6 (7-3) win in the second set. Freshman Mark Prettyman (Fairfax, Va./Thomas Jefferson) also played a tiebreaker in his first set but fell after two.

The Tartans will next face John Carroll University at home on Sunday, February 19 at 10 a.m.
