#8 Tartans Close Week with 6-3 Win Against #10 Wesleyan

(CLAREMONT, Calif.) - The eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team closed the week with a 6-3 win against 10th-ranked Wesleyan University in Claremont, California. The Tartans are now 9-5 for the year and finished the week in California with a 3-2 record and two wins over top 10 teams.

Against Wesleyan, the Tartans finished doubles action with two wins. The 15th-ranked pair of juniors Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) and Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) began with an 8-2 win at first doubles. Sophomore Nicholas Calzolano (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) and freshman Ben Ash (Johns Creek, Ga. / Johns Creek) closed doubles with a 9-8 (7-4) win at third doubles that gave the Tartans a 2-1 advantage.

Levine, ranked second in the nation in singles, defeated 14th-ranked Steven Chen, 6-1, 6-4, for the Tartans' third point of the match. After Wesleyan won at sixth singles, sophomore Ray Boppana (Boxborough, Mass. / Acton Boxborough Regional), ranked 20th in the nation, defeated Tiago Eusebio at third singles by a 6-2, 6-2 score.

Match point was won by Downing when he topped seventh-ranked Andrew Finkelman at second singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Also winning for the Tartans was freshman Kailas Shekar (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga) at fifth singles, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Tartans will next face 28th-ranked Denison University on Saturday, March 31 at 10:00 a.m. on their home courts at Carnegie Mellon.
