Tartans Open Year at Kenyon Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team opened its season at the Kenyon College Invitational on Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17.

Highlights of Singles Play

  • Senior Nicholas Wernink won all three of his matches with wins against players from Washington and Lee University, Denison University, and the College of Wooster.
  • Freshman Jonathan Gu was 2-1 in singles play with his first career victory coming by an 8-5 score against Rider Yeaman of Washington and Lee University.
  • Other singles victories came from sophomore Akshay Joshi, junior Chaitanya Irkar, freshman Justin Yi, and freshman Daniel Kong.

Highlights of Doubles Play

  • The Tartans won three of nine doubles matches for the weekend.
  • Winners were Yi and Gu by a 6-3 score against Patrick Johnson and Namit Misra of Wooster, Wernink and freshman Theodore Gershon by a 7-6 score against a pair from Denison, and Joshi and Kong by an 8-7 score against a duo from Kenyon.
