Tartans Drop Match to Division I Saint Francis

(GREENSBURG, Pa.) – The 22nd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team hosted Division I Saint Francis University on Friday, February 9, at Greensburg Racquet Club. The Tartans had a lead after doubles play but fell in five singles matches with Saint Francis taking the 6-3 win. The Tartans are now 1-1 in dual matches this year.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans trailed 1-0 after a loss at number one doubles before senior Nicholas Wernink and freshman Theodore Gershon won 7-5 at number three doubles and sophomore Akshay Joshi and senior Derek Wong won 7-6 (8-6) at number two doubles to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Wernink finished singles play first with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at fourth singles to give the Tartans their third point.
  • Saint Francis would then win the rest of the singles matches to earn the 6-3 victory.
  • Senior Nadim Motaghedi played his first match of the season and had a tight match before falling 6-4, 6-3 at third singles.
