#18 Tartans Battle to 5-4 Loss at #17 Southwestern

(GEORGETOWN, Texas) – The 18th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team played 17th-ranked Southwestern University on Wednesday, March 6 at Southwestern University shortly after topping 39th-ranked Concordia (Texas) University. The match went down to the last singles match with Southwestern earning a 5-4 victory. The Tartans are now 3-6 for the season while Southwestern moves to 5-0.

How it Happened

  • Senior Derek Wong and sophomore Akshay Joshi won 8-6 at second doubles with senior Nicholas Wernink and freshman Theodore Gershon winning 8-5 at third doubles to give the Tartans a 2-1 lead.
  • Senior Nadim Motaghedi won 6-1, 6-1 at third singles and freshman Daniel Kong won 6-1, 7-5 at second singles to give the Tartans a 4-1 advantage.
  • The remaining four singles matches went three sets with Southwestern prevailing.
  • Three of the last four singles matches needed tiebreakers to decide the match.

Notes

  • Kong extended his singles win streak to five.
  • Motaghedi won two matches on the day.
  • The match was moved up a day due to expected rain in the area forcing the Tartans to play two nationally-ranked opponents on the same day.

They took on the unforeseen schedule change with grit and determination and battled to the very end in a difficult environment. We learned a lot during this trip and are eager to get home to resume training for our next matches."
