Men’s Track & Field Defends Quad Meet Title

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team hosted its annual quad meet on Saturday, April 7 with Penn State Behrend, Washington & Jefferson College and Westminster College in attendance. The Tartans finished first with 171.5 points.

Westminster placed second with 166 points and Penn State Behrend scored 161 points followed by Washington & Jefferson with 161 points.

Sophomore Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase crossing the finish line with a Gesling Stadium record and a personal-best time of 9:18.41.  Senior Rob Morhard (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) placed third in the steeplechase after crossing in 10:00.70 while sophomore Kenneth Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) placed second in the 1,500 meter run in  4:04.48.

Newby picked up his second first-place showing on the day when he crossed in 1:58.75 in the 800-meter run.  Junior Noel Titus (Bronx, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) ran a career-best time of 22.18 in the 200-meter dash to win the race.

For the third straight meet, the Tartan throwers excelled.  Sophomore Nathan Cheek (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) won the hammer throw with a distance of 49.22 meters followed by senior Anthony Hernandez's (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) 48.03 meter toss. Junior Patrick Robinson (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) placed third and sophomore Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) finished fourth with throws of 47.90 and 46.96 meters, respectively.

Erra-Hernandez had the top throw in the shot put with a distance of 15.54 meters while freshman Gino Pilato (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) had a season-best toss of 14.47 meters to place second.  Erra-Hernandez then won the discus throw with a career-best mark of 47.05 meters and Pilato took third with a distance of 43.66 meters.

Freshman Michael McDermott (Seekonk, Mass./La Salle Academy) competed in the high jump and placed second with a height of 1.83 meters.

The team will be in competition again on Friday, April 13 when the distance members travel to Bucknell University and on Saturday, April 14 at Westminster College.
