Two Tartans Receive UAA Honor

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Junior Zachary Erra-Hernandez (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) and sophomore Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team were named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week. The two helped the Tartans to a first-place team finish at their Mini-Invite on Saturday, March 30.

Erra-Hernandez won two events while taking second in another.  The junior won the shot put with a season-best mark of 15.81 meters while earning top honors in the discus throw with a mark of 44.27 meters.  His second-place showing was in the hammer throw after recording a career-best toss of 50.75 meters. He currently ranks 10th nationally in the shot put and first in the UAA.

Vandenberg, who is receiving the Association running award for the second straight week, won the 800-meter run. It also marked the second straight outdoor meet in doing so, as he bettered his time by .14 seconds crossing in 1:53.17.  He currently is the top 800-meter runner in the UAA in sixth in Division III.

The team will host its final meet of the season on Saturday, April 6 starting with field events at 10:00 a.m.
