Tartans Win Eight Events, Fall at Case Western Reserve

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team came up short against Case Western Reserve University in the Seventh Annual Battle of the Obelisk as the Spartans won on both sides and by a 70-66 score in the men's competition.

Sophomore Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) placed second in the long jump with a distance of 6.25 meters, third in the triple jump with a mark of 12.54 meters and third in the high jump clearing 1.80 meters. Boyer also ran the 55-meter hurdles, placing second in 8.21 seconds.

Freshman Shane Conton (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) was second in the triple jump for the Tartans with a leap of 12.88 meters while sophomore Matthew Seifu (Silver Spring, Md./Sidwell Friends) was third in the long jump with a mark of 6.19 meters.

Freshman David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) tossed the shot put 13.35 meters to place second, while freshman Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) was third in the weight throw with a heave of 12.84 meters.

Freshman Jeff Chen (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) won the 55-meter dash in 6.66 seconds while sophomore Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) was first in the mile run in a time of 4:28.31. Senior Elliot Watson (Lebanon, Ohio/Miami Valley School) also earned points for the Tartans in the mile run, finishing third in 4:34.40.

Senior Thomas Vandenberg (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) raced to a victory in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.90 and also won the 200-meter dash in 22.72 while junior Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) won the 800-meter run in 1:57.97.

In the distance races, senior George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) placed first in the 5,000-meter run in 15:13.63 with sophomore Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) behind him in second place in 15:16.37. A trio of Tartans swept the 3,000-meter run with senior Eamon Cullinane (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) winning in 8:53.07. Senior Joshua Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was second in 8:53.29 with Degen placing third in 8:53.75.

In the relays, the men's distance medley team won in 10:34.7 while the 4x400 team finished second.

The Tartans will head back to Denison, where the won the Lid Lifter, for the Bob Shannon Invite on Saturday, February 7.
