Men’s and Women’s Track Earns USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Awards

(NEW ORLEANS, La.) - The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the 2016 Division III All-Academic Track & Field Teams and Carnegie Mellon University was included on the lists for the 10th consecutive year. A total of 112 men's teams and 175 women's teams earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.1 or better.

The men's track and field team achieved a team GPA of 3.32 for the 2015-2016 school year while the women achieved a GPA of 3.40 to earn the team distinction.

In addition to the team earning the award, juniors Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) and Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) along with sophomore Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) from the women's team were named to the team individually.

All three athletes qualified for the award by achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better with either competing at the NCAA Championships or finishing the season ranked in the national top 35 in an individual event.

Cook earned a 3.91 GPA and finished 32nd in the nation in the 400-meter dash during the outdoor season, setting a new school record with a time of 56.67 seconds. Watro cruised to a time of 9:16.62 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish ranked 30th and earned a 3.70 in the classroom. Norley ran his way to an All-America honor in the mile run at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and finished 24th nationally in the 1,500-meter run during the outdoor season while posting a 3.39 GPA.
